Mount Vesuvius rises directly above the Bay of Naples between Naples, Ercolano and Pompeii. The walking route to the crater, known as the Gran Cono trail, begins at Piazzale di Quota 1000, a car park about 1,000 metres above sea level reached via the provincial road that climbs from Ercolano.
