Naples Underground

Guided tours descend from Piazza San Gaetano into the tunnel network that supplied the city with water for 23 centuries, from Greek cisterns to the Bourbon era. The route crosses passages decorated with the blue tiles of the nineteenth-century waterworks.

The visit also reaches the remains of a Greek-Roman theater, entered through a trapdoor inside a private home. Tours last around 90 minutes, and a combination ticket adds a Margherita or Marinara pizza with a drink at a nearby pizzeria.

Naples day trips

Organized excursions depart from central Naples toward the Amalfi Coast, a UNESCO World Heritage stretch of more than 50 kilometers between Positano and Vietri sul Mare. Itineraries combine Positano, Amalfi, and Ravello, with some routes adding Sorrento or replacing the road with a boat crossing.

Most departures leave from Piazza Garibaldi, next to Napoli Centrale station, and last between 8 and 10 hours. Guides accompany each group, and free time in every town allows visits to landmarks such as the Cathedral of St. Andrew in Amalfi or the gardens of Villa Rufolo in Ravello.

Museum of the Treasure of San Gennaro

Located at 149 Via Duomo, beside the cathedral, this museum gathers seven centuries of donations that popes, monarchs, and Neapolitan families dedicated to the patron saint of the city. The collection includes the necklace of San Gennaro and one of the largest emeralds in the world.

Admission covers the Baroque Chapel of San Gennaro, decorated with masterpieces from the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries. An audio guide in five languages accompanies the visit, which takes about 75 minutes.

Naples hop-on hop-off bus

Open-top buses connect the main landmarks of the city on two routes, with a full loop taking about 90 minutes. Stops serve the National Archaeological Museum, the Royal Palace of Naples, and the Teatro di San Carlo near the waterfront.

Tickets remain valid for 24 hours after activation, allowing unlimited boarding at any stop. Onboard audio commentary is available in eight languages, and each bus provides free WiFi and a printed route map.

Herculaneum

The eruption of Mount Vesuvius in AD 79 buried this coastal town under volcanic material that preserved wooden structures, frescoes, and everyday objects. The excavation is more compact than Pompeii, and many houses retain their upper floors and decorated interiors.

Entry tickets include a downloadable audio guide for the visit. The site sits in modern Ercolano, a short walk from the Ercolano Scavi station on the Circumvesuviana line from Naples, and admission ends 90 minutes before closing time.

Mount Vesuvius

The volcano that buried Pompeii and Herculaneum in AD 79 remains active, and its summit belongs to Vesuvius National Park. The trail circles the rim of the Gran Cono at 1,280 meters, with views over the Gulf of Naples, Capri, Ischia, and the Sorrento coast.

Tickets combine crater access with roundtrip transport from Naples, Pompeii, or Ercolano. Several options add skip-the-line entry to Pompeii, an audio guide, or the services of a volcanological guide, with excursions lasting between three and eight hours.

Sansevero Chapel

This chapel in the historic center displays the Veiled Christ, the figure of Christ under a translucent shroud that Giuseppe Sanmartino carved from a single block of marble in 1753. The program of prince Raimondo di Sangro also includes the allegories of Modesty and Disillusion and the Anatomical Machines.

Entry operates through timed guided visits in groups of up to 30 people, with headsets provided to follow the guide. Some tours reach the chapel on foot along Spaccanapoli and Piazza San Domenico Maggiore before entering.

Spanish Quarters Underground

Beneath the Spanish Quarters, guided visits descend about 40 meters into galleries opened in the sixteenth century under Spanish rule, when builders quarried volcanic tuff to raise the city above. The tunnels later joined the urban aqueduct network and preserve an underground chapel with religious artifacts.

During the Second World War the chambers served as air-raid shelters for the neighborhood. Tours last about one hour, depart from Vico S. Anna di Palazzo, and run separately in English and Italian.
