The Royal Park and Fountains

The Royal Park extends three kilometers northward from the rear facade of the palace toward the Briano hill. Luigi and Carlo Vanvitelli designed the landscape, incorporating a continuous water axis fed by the Caroline Aqueduct.

The park holds relevance as an expansive Baroque garden combining formal Italian design with geometric waterways. Visitors explore the grounds on foot or via shuttle transportation to observe monumental fountains along the central canal, including the Fountain of the Dolphins, the Fountain of Ceres, the Fountain of Venus and Adonis, and the Fountain of Diana and Actaeon surrounding the Great Cascade.

The English Garden

The English Garden occupies the northeastern corner of the estate, situated adjacent to the Great Cascade. English botanist John Andrew Graefer and architect Carlo Vanvitelli constructed the grounds in 1786 under the patronage of Queen Maria Carolina of Austria.

The site holds botanical relevance as one of the earliest informal landscape gardens established in Italy. The layout contains exotic plant species imported globally, winding pathways, artificial streams, and classical ruins. Key features inside include the Cryptoporticus, the Bath of Venus, a lily pond, and a historic greenhouse, providing independent exploration within the upper grounds of the estate.

Closing days and special dates

The Royal Palace of Caserta closes to the public every Tuesday, with fixed annual closures applying on January 1 (New Year's Day) and December 25 (Christmas Day). Beyond general operating schedules, certain buildings, exhibition areas, and gardens within the complex are subject to specific access limitations, service schedules, or seasonal closures:

• English Garden: Closed on the first Sunday of every month and on nationwide free-admission days (Domenica al Museo).
• Court Theater: Closed throughout the entire month of August, as well as on free-admission days.
• Grand Gallery: Closed on free-admission days.
• Palatine Chapel: Public access is limited on Sundays from 12:00 to 13:00 due to Holy Mass services.

How to get there

The palace stands at Piazza Carlo di Borbone in the center of Caserta:

• Train: Regional and high-speed trains operate directly from Napoli Centrale (Naples Central Station) to Caserta Railway Station. The journey takes 30 to 40 minutes, and the station sits 200 meters directly opposite the main palace gates.
• Bus: Shuttle bus services connect Naples International Airport (Capodichino) and central Naples directly to Piazza Carlo di Borbone.
• Car: Drivers reach the complex via the A1 motorway (Autostrada del Sole), taking the Caserta Nord exit and following signs toward the underground parking facilities at Piazza Carlo di Borbone.

Entrances

The complex features designated entry corridors to handle visitor traffic:

• Main Central Entrance (Piazza Carlo di Borbone): The triple-arched central gateway leads directly into the main courtyard. This physical entrance provides step-free ramps, access to the central ticket offices, cloakrooms, and elevators ascending to the first-floor Royal Apartments.
• Corso Giannone Entrance: Situated on the eastern perimeter of the grounds, this gate provides direct pedestrian access to the Royal Park and English Garden, avoiding the main palace building queues.
• Accessibility: Wheelchair users access the central interior courts and Royal Apartments using ramps and passenger elevators. The Royal Park utilizes paved side paths along the main canal, and accessible shuttle buses transport guests with mobility impairments toward the upper waterfalls.
